TSA Security Enhancements: Landside Terminal Baggage Conveyors System, Passenger Screening, Baggage Screening and Baggage Handling Systems Integration, Tampa International Airport, Tampa, FL

 

Due to the increased awareness in our nation’s security the TSA (Transportation Security Agency) was formed and security procedures and enhancements were mandated by the Federal Government. The following enhancements were implemented at Tampa’s International Airport to increase the safety to the passengers and the facilities. The projects listed below are design/build projects:

 

Masterplan: Initially prepared to identify areas of improvement, etc...

Passenger Screening Areas: Implemented at all areas within the landside terminal tram connections.

Baggage Screening: Implemented on Level 1 Baggage Handling System Integration: A system which moves the bags from the landside facility to the multiple airside buildings which had a corresponding baggage sorting system specifically for that airside building. The conveyor system runs on the underside of the passenger tram from the landside terminal to the airside facilities. Several components of this project included:

Airside A Sort: This is a standalone building where the bags in-bound and out-bound from the terminal are routed to be sorted then transported to Airside A. The Airside A terminal building was an existing terminal with limited space requiring a separate stand alone sort building.

Airside C Sort: The integration and coordination of the baggage handling system for in-bound and out-bound baggage into Airside C was required. The construction and design of Airside C was performed by another architect under a separate contract (which Gartek Engineering, Corp. also provided engineering services).

Airside D-E Sort: Airside D required a temporary baggage sort as there were future plans for demotion of this structure. The baggage system to serve Airside D-E required coordination and the integration of the in-bound and out-bound baggage handling system and sorting. This facility was added to the Airside E Terminal. The construction and design was performed by another architect under a separate contact (which Gartek Engineering, Corp. Also provided engineering services.)

Airside F Sort: Addition of the sorting facility for the in-bound and out-bound bags sent via conveyor from the landside terminal.
